Otto Addo

Former Ghana International Otto Addo has been named as the assistant coach of Borussia Dortmund after the club decided to part ways with their head coach Lucien Favre following a 5-1 humiliation at the hands of newly-promoted Stuttgart on Saturday.

The embarrassing defeat leaves BVB fifth in the Bundesliga, five points off the pace of leaders Bayern Munich, whose 24 points are matched by RB Leipzig.

By contrast, Dortmund has earned only four points in their last five matches, although they did make impressive progress in the Champions League, finishing first in Group F ahead of Lazio.

Nonetheless, Dortmund have run out of patience after 11 games of the new campaign, deciding to sack Favre and appoint assistant Edin Terzic as interim boss until the end of the current season.

Confirming the news, the official Twitter handle of the German club said: “Assistant coach Edin Terzic has been appointed as interim manager until the end of the current season. Terzic’s coaching team will be joined by Sebastian Geppert and Otto Addo”.

The move is further testament of how highly respected Otto Addo is at the club.

Addo, who is a former player of the Yellow and Blacks, was announced as the side’s ‘talent coach’ last year.

The role which was created for the Ghanaian is to serve as a link between the youth and senior teams.

He is responsible for helping to promote Borussia Dortmund’s most talented youngsters to the senior squad and is in charge of their supervision and additional training.

The BVB elite talent coach would now have to help as Edin Terzic attempts to halt the club’s poor run in the league this season.

The former Black Star player was at the club between 1999 and 2005, making 98 Bundesliga appearances (16 goals) and winning the 2002 Bundesliga title during his time with Dortmund.

Born in Germany, Addo represented Ghana at the World Cup in 2006, making two appearances at the event as the Black Stars reached the round of 16.

Christian Pulisic breaks Lionel Messi’s record after Chelsea progress into Champions League semi-finals

Published

Christian Pulisic broke Lionel Messi’s record for how many times he was fouled during Chelsea’s Champions League quarter-final tie against FC Porto.

Thomas Tuchel’s side fell to a 1-0 defeat in Seville on Tuesday night but moved into the semi-finals with a 2-1 aggregate win.

Porto couldn’t find a goal until stoppage time, and instead of targeting a goal during the game, they looked at Pulisic and constantly hacked away at the 22-year-old.

He was fouled 11 times, and as per ESPN, that is the most in a single Champions League match since Messi back in 2011 against Real Madrid.

Pulisic also came away with the UEFA Man of the Match award in Seville as Chelsea set up a semi-final tie against either Real Madrid or Liverpool.

Pulisic’s boss Thomas Tuchel was delighted and hailed the ‘big achievement’ of reaching the semi-finals.

He said: “It is a very big achievement. You see when Chelsea was last in the semi final. We are not used to being there. Once you are there, you play for the final. This is clear.

“We take every minute to learn and grow. You cannot improve without these experiences so we are doing it now during the process, while we are playing it. Yes, it is nice being on the sideline because you see all the effort.

“These games against Porto may not be the best to watch on TV but believe me it is a tough, tough side to play against.

“It is very physical, they hassle for every ball, they never let you turn or think for two seconds for other solutions. They put pressure on you, they are emotional so it is a lot to deal with and we went through.

“I am super happy, we will enjoy this evening.”

Tennis superstar, Serena Williams was in tears at the Australian Open Press Conference after her defeat to Naomi Osaka in the semi-final.

Naomi Osaka claimed an impressive victory over Serena Williams to reach the Australian Open final and end the American’s latest quest for a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam title. Three-time Slam champion Osaka withstood early pressure from Williams to win 6-3 6-4.

Osaka is on a 20-match unbeaten streak and has never lost a Slam final. The Japanese will face either America’s Jennifer Brady or Czech Karolina Muchova in Saturday’s final.

Thomas Partey provided his first Arsenal assist in the Premier League during their 3-0 victory against Newcastle United on Monday.

The Ghana international, who joined Arsenal from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid during the summer transfer window, after the Gunners triggered the £45million release clause in his contract, stepped off the bench for the final 21 minutes against Palace, handing a huge boost to Arteta ahead of a busy period of the season.

Having made his return to action via the bench against Palace, the midfield enforcer was named in the starting line-up for the Newcastle United encounter. Following a cagey first half, Arsenal opened the scoring through talisman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the 50th minute.

The Gabon star was released with a vintage long pass by Partey before slotting his shot past Magpies goalkeeper Karl Darlow. After his goal contribution, manager Arteta replaced the versatile midfielder with Mohammed Elneny on the 60th-minute mark.

Arsenal went on to bag the maximum points through goals from Bukayo Saka and Aubameyang’s second strike. The win takes Arsenal to 10th on the standings with 27 points from 19 games.

‘I would swap Dybala for Kane instead of Pogba’ – Capello

The former Bianconeri boss doesn’t think it would make any sense for his old club to exchange the “special” Argentine for the midfielder, Pogba.

Fabio Capello has admitted he would like to see Harry Kane join Juventus, and that he’d swap Paulo Dybala for the Tottenham striker instead of Paul Pogba.

Dybala has been heavily linked with a move away from Juve in recent weeks, with the attacker yet to commit to fresh terms at the Allianz Stadium.

Goal has reported that the Argentine turned down the chance to extend his stay at the Allianz Stadium beyond 2022 over the summer, with the Bianconeri’s offer deemed too low by both the player and his representatives.
